Computer room in a slum

Equipment: 15 computers

Our partner Advanced Centre for Empowerment (ACE) has opened their first computer room in a slum in Phnom Penh with support from Smiles of Hope foundation and IFL

Since the beginning of 2021, a computer room has been set-up with support of Smiles of Hope foundation and IFL. The slum located in the heart of the city, Phnom Penh. This slum community people have settled along the sewage canal, followed by an 800-meter-long dirt road. It is one of the largest poor slums amongst about other 277 slums in which reside by about 30,000 families.

The story in short

Regardless, Covid-19 pandemics and many lockdowns throughout the year we could manage to make use of the computers and set-up the computer classroom. The computers were used to teach online classes to community children such as English, Arts, computer basic skills… etc. The computers were used to teach children from two slum communities—Boeung Trabek and Vihea Suor (the relocated site of the slum from the city) with a total 107 students including 43 females and 21 youth for 2021. We hope to utilize the support to benefit more to the slum community children and youth for 2022. We are sure that children will enjoy the computer classes as now we are having classes ever Monday and Thursday.

“My name is MeyMey and I am 14 years old. I am really excited and enthusiastic when there is a computer class because this will provide me a chance to learn what I am passionate about.  And I believe that this course will assist me in comprehending the fundamentals of computer skills as well as provide me with some useful advice that I may apply to my studies.  Furthermore, with the knowledge gained from this course, I will be able to conduct additional web research for my courses, homework, and occasionally for fun purposes. Ultimately, I'd want to express my gratitude to Smile of Hope and IFL for giving me and others the opportunity to learn computer skills, which will benefit every student here.”
